An antenna consisting of a series of elements of the same type arranged in a line. If the elements are fed with a signal of the same phase, the array operates in broadside mode (see antenna array); if they are fed with a signal whose phase differs by an amount equivalent to the electric distance (see electric dimensions) between the elements, it operates in endfire mode.
A phased linear array is a linear array antenna in which the phase of the feed to each element is adjusted so that the maximum radiation lies in an arbitrary direction to form a scanning array. See also planar array antenna; log-periodic antenna.
