Relatively broad absorption features in the spectra of distant sources that are caused by material in interstellar space. A variety of complex molecules have been suggested as the cause of these features, but none have been identified as responsible. Over 200 such bands are known, the strongest being at 443.0 and 617.7 nm. The broad interstellar ultraviolet absorption centred at 218 nm is also a DIB.
