and veteran of four space flights. He was the pilot of two space shuttle flights, including the Discovery mission in October 1998 to deploy the Spartan 201 spacecraft. In July 2001, he commanded Atlantis on a mission to install a new airlock module on the International Space Station. In July 2006, he joined the final mission for space shuttle Discovery as mission commander. His later flight to the ISS was postponed following the 2003 Columbia space shuttle disaster. Lindsey was selected as an astronaut in 1994 and retired from NASA in July 2011. He has logged more than 1 510 hours in space.
