The tree Citrus aurantifolia (family Rutaceae) or its green fruit, rich in sugars and acids, originally from south-eastern Asia but now cultivated widely and used in many cuisines. During the nineteenth century British sailors were given a daily allowance of limes to prevent scurvy, a vitamin C-deficiency disease, hence their nickname ‘Limey’.
