单词 Atlantic-type coast
释义
Atlantic-type coast

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • A coast characterized by subsidences and fractures that cut across the grain of the folded mountain formations inland. Typically, such a coast borders a relatively young ocean that is widening because of sea-floor spreading. This type of coast was first recognized by Eduard Suess. Compare pacific-type coast.

Geography
  • A coastline where the trend of ridges and valleys runs transverse to the coast. If the coastal lowlands are inundated by the sea, a ria or fiord coastline may result. The coast of south-west Eire is an example.

    Compare with pacific coast.
