A paramilitary US police force. The Texas Rangers were first organized in the 1830s to protect US settlers in Texas against Mexican Indians. After the formation of the republic of Texas (1836), they were built up by Houston as a mounted border patrol of some 1600 picked men. They became renowned for their exploits against marauders and rustlers in the heyday of the great cattle drives after the American Civil War.
