The raising up of an object against gravity so that it is not in contact with a surface beneath it. This is frequently done using electric or magnetic fields. There are many technological applications of levitation, including levitation melting, in which a metal or other substance being melted is suspended in an electric or magnetic field and does not come into contact with the material of any container.
