The shogunate in Japan from 1339 to 1573. In 1333 Ashikaga Takanju (1305–58) overthrew the Hojo, who had acted as regents for the Kamakura shoguns. Soon after he drove the emperor Go‐Daigo from the capital of Kyoto. In the ensuing dynastic dispute he installed Koyo as emperor and in return the emperor appointed him shogun in succession to the Kamakura shogunate, which had become ineffectual. He moved the shogunate from Kamakura to Kyoto. The Ashikaga shoguns never exercised great power as the shogunate witnessed much fighting between rival daimyo and their samurai armies. The increasing disorder of the Ashikaga shogunate ended in 1573 when Oda Nobunaga and his army drove the shogun from Kyoto.
