An effect predicted to occur in general relativity theory by Josef Lense (1890–1985) and Hans Thirring (1888–1976); in 1918 they predicted that a compact rotating body would cause the space near it to rotate in the same direction. The phenomenon is also known as frame dragging. It has been reported in observations of neutron stars and black holes. Measurements have also been made using shifts in the orbits of satellites around the earth.
