Battle in Holland in World War II. Parachutists of the 1st Allied Airborne Division (British, US, Polish) were dropped in an attempt to capture key bridges over the Lower Rhine to enable the Allied armies to advance more rapidly into Germany. The attempt failed, and resulted in 7,000 Allied casualties. German units blocked the path of Allied divisions, which were attempting to reach and reinforce the airborne troops.
