Armitage began studying mathematics at Cambridge U in 1941, but, in 1943, he was recruited into the Ministry of Supply, encountering practical statistics whilst working alongside Barnard. In 1946 he completed his studies at Cambridge, joining the faculty at LSHTM in 1947. In 1976 he succeeded Bartlett as Professor of Biomathematics at Oxford U. He was President of the IBS in 1972, editing the Society's journal Biometrics from 1980 to 1984, and becoming an Honorary Life Member of the Society in 1998. He was President of the RSS in 1982, and is one of only three individuals (the others being Plackett and Durbin) to have a complete set of Guy Medals (Bronze in 1962, Silver in 1978, Gold in 1990). He was President of the ISCB in 1990.
