单词 exosphere
释义
exosphere

Physics
  • See earth’s atmosphere.

Astronomy
  • The outermost part of the Earth’s atmosphere, lying at an altitude above 500 km, and petering out at greater heights into interplanetary space. At such levels the atmospheric particle densities are extremely low; the density at 1000 km altitude is estimated to be only 7.3 × 105 particles/cm3 (compared with 2.5 × 1019 particles/cm3 at sea level). Under such conditions, collisions between particles are rare.

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • Outer region of the upper atmosphere extending from a base of 500–750 km altitude. The zone has a very low concentration of gases (mostly atoms of oxygen, hydrogen, and helium, of which about 1% are ionized). Gases can escape from it into space, as molecular collisions are much reduced because of the low gas density. The exosphere and much of the underlying ionosphere form part of the magnetosphere.
