who spent most of his career in the USA. Lehmann’s family left Germany for Zurich in 1933, when Hitler came to power. After study at Cambridge U, Lehmann moved to UCB, where he obtained his PhD (supervised by Neyman) in 1946. He promptly joined the UCB faculty, where his 42 research students included Bickel and Puri. He was Editor of the Annals of Mathematical Statistics during 1953–5. He was President of the IMS in 1961 and was its Wald Lecturer in 1964. He was elected a member of the AAAS in 1975 and of the NAS in 1978. He was the COPSS Fisher Lecturer in 1988. He was created an Honorary Fellow of the RSS in 1986 and was presented with the Wilks Award of the ASA in 1996.
