A technique for dating rocks which utilizes the weak radioactive decay of potassium-40, the only naturally occurring radioactive isotope of potassium. The isotope potassium-40 decays to argon-40 with a half-life of 1.3 billion years. The method is important in determining the age of specimens such as meteorites.
