An optical instrument that magnifies images of faint and distant objects. Telescopes in space have been used to study infrared, ultraviolet, and X-ray radiation that does not penetrate the atmosphere, but carries much information about the births, lives, and deaths of stars and galaxies. See also radio telescope.
