A long-period comet discovered on 1861 May 13 by the Australian amateur astronomer John Tebbutt (1834–1916); also called the Great Comet, formerly designated 1861 II. It reached perihelion (0.82 au) on June 12 and was 0.13 au from Earth on June 30, when the Earth passed through its tail. Comet Tebbutt reached a peak magnitude of 0, and had a tail of 100° or more. The comet’s orbit has a period of 409 years, eccentricity 0.985, and inclination 85°.4.
