A genus comprising four species of antelopes (family Bovidae), three of which (scimitar oryx, O. dammati, East African oryx, O. beisa, and gemsbok, O. gazelle) occur in arid regions of Africa, and the Arabian oryx (O. leucoryx) in the Arabian Peninsula. Oryxes have pale coats with striking dark face and leg markings and very long horns. They live in herds of up to 600 individuals.
