A luminous electric discharge in a gas with a characteristically high current density and low potential gradient. An arc occurs (is struck) when the gas along its path becomes a plasma. The arc is drawn from a localized spot on the cathode, resulting in heating of the cathode. Thermionic emission occurs with a resultant drop in potential across the tube. Arc-discharge tubes can therefore carry very large currents at voltage drops of tens of volts only. See also gas-discharge tube.
