单词 aquifer
释义
aquifer

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • A body of permeable rock, for example, unconsolidated gravel or sand stratum, that is capable of storing significant quantities of water, is underlain by impermeable material, and through which groundwater moves. An unconfined aquifer is one in which the water table defines the upper water limit. A confined aquifer is sealed above and below by impermeable material. A perched aquifer is an unconfined groundwater body supported by a small impermeable or slowly permeable unit. See permeability.

Geography
  • A rock, such as chalk, which will hold water and let it through. Water runs into aquifers where the rock is exposed to the surface or lies below the water-table. See Water Science and Technology Board (2008), Prospects for Managed Underground Storage of Recoverable Water. A confined aquifer is sandwiched between two impermeable rocks, and the water-table marks the upper limit of an unconfined aquifer. See A. Klimchouck, ed. (2000).
