He also helped to formulate the metric system. Through very careful experimentation he was the first to show that although matter can change its state in a chemical reaction, the total mass remains the same at the end as at the beginning of every chemical change. He was the first to state the conservation of mass. During the French Revolution, he was accused of various crimes and guillotined.
