The establishment of precise Earth-Moon distances by aiming laser beams telescopically, from the Earth at reflecting mirrors placed on the lunar surface by the Apollo 11–15 missions, and measuring the return time to the receipt of the reflections. By making such measurements from different terrestrial sites relative plate motions can be determined.
