A proton collider at CERN, which started operating in 2008. It accelerates two beams of protons to very high energies and then causes the beams to collide with each other, giving effective energies of about 14 TeV. The Higgs boson was discovered at the LHC. It is hoped that the LHC will provide information on physics beyond the standard model, such as supersymmetry.
