The configuration in which the celestial longitude of a planet or the Moon is the same as the Sun’s, or differs from it by 180°; the Earth, Sun, and the third body are then in line as seen from above the plane of the ecliptic. Hence, for the Moon, syzygy is the time of new or full Moon, and for a planet it is the time of conjunction or opposition.
