The people occupying northern Nigeria from c. 500 bc to 200 ad; this culture was important for two reasons. As the earliest known centre of iron-working south of the Sahara, it played a major part in passing on metallurgy and its distinctive terracotta figurines are considered ancestral to the later statuary of the city of Ife.
