He studied electromagnetism, thermoelectricity, and electrophysiology. He invented the astatic galvanometer, which improved on earlier galvanometers by mounting two needles parallel to each other with their magnetic poles reversed, thus eliminating the effect on the instrument of the geomagnetic field.
