The SI unit of electric current equal to one coulomb per second. Since May 2019, it is based on the definition of elementary electrical charge as a fixed numerical value of 1.602 176 634 x10-19 coulombs. It is named after the French physicist and mathematician André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836), who made significant discoveries in electricity and magnetism.
