An orderly English peasant protest against the profiteering and enclosures of local Norfolk landlords. Led by Robert Kett, a well-to-do tradesman, 16,000 small farmers encamped outside Norwich, and eventually gained control of the city. By their disciplined self-government, the rebels aimed to impress the authorities and shame the local magnates. The rebellion was suppressed by forces under John Dudley (later Duke of Northumberland) who routed the rebels at Dussindale on 27 August. Kett and his brother William were among those executed.
