The amount by which a certain quantity or variable is increased. An increment can normally be positive or negative, or zero, and is often required to be in some sense ‘small’. If the variable is x, the increment may be denoted by Δx or δx.
Statistics
A small change in the value of a variable.
Chemical Engineering
A small difference in a variable. For example, the level of a process liquid in a tank feeding to a process may change by an increment Δh over an increment of time Δt.
Computer
To increase the contents of a register or counter by one.
Electronics and Electrical Engineering
The operation of adding one to the value of a variable, usually in a computer program. It is the opposite operation to decrement.
