A veteran of the Boer War, during World War I he commanded the First Cavalry Division and later the Third Army on the Western Front. In 1917 he led the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. Having captured Jerusalem in December 1917, he went on to defeat the Turkish forces in Palestine in 1918. He was promoted to Field Marshal and later served as High Commissioner in Egypt (1919–25).
