International Nurses Day is celebrated on 12 May, her birthday.

  • (see cyclic data). Nightingale is best known for her work as a nurse at Scutari during the Crimean War, where the soldiers called her ‘The Lady with the Lamp’. She was an efficient hospital administrator and compiled quantities of statistics in her drive for hospital reform: she standardized the reporting of deaths using Miss Nightingale's Scheme for Uniform Hospital Statistics. She has also been described as the ‘the Passionate Statistician’, and she wrote that Statistics is ‘the most important science in the whole world’.

World History
  • She became famous during the Crimean War for her attempts to publicize the state of the army’s medical arrangements and improve the standard of care. In 1854 she took a party of nurses to the army hospital at Scutari, where she improved sanitation and medical procedures, thereby achieving a dramatic reduction in the mortality rate; she became known as `the Lady of the Lamp’ for her nightly rounds. She returned to England in 1856 and devoted the rest of her life to attempts to improve public health and hospital care.
