The deepest region of metamorphism, where temperatures are 500–700° C, hydrostatic pressure is mainly strong, and there is little or no shearing stress. Rocks formed in the katazone include high-grade schists, gneisses, granulites, eclogites, and amphibolites. The term is little used nowadays because it is the physical conditions of metamorphism that are considered important, rather than the depth at which they occur.
