The oceanic current that flows westwards south of the Aleutian Islands and parallel to, but north of, the N. Pacific current. The water mass is a mixture of water from the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents. See alsoalaska current.
Geography
A cold ocean current of the North Pacific. The Aleutian trench lies at the boundary of the North American and Pacific plates; try Choi (1990) Pac. Geol. 5. The Aleutian low is a semi-permanent ‘centre of action’ of persistently lower pressure (less than 1013 mb) and higher humidity and relatively higher temperatures for that latitude. In conjunction with its changing relationship with the North Pacific High in the eastern part of the Pacific, it is the major feature of the general circulation controlling the weather over parts of North America.
