A city in northern Morocco, famous for the battle of the Three Kings (1578). From the 15th century it suffered attacks from Portuguese coastal ports, and became an advanced post of the mujahidin, “warriors for the faith”, in retaliation. In 1578 Sebastian I of Portugal attacked with 20,000 men, but the Moroccans, mustering 50,000, defeated them utterly. Sebastian himself perished, with 8,000 men, and in 1580 Portugal fell into the hands of Spain.
