A Japanese 8.2-m reflector for optical and infrared astronomy, opened in 1999 at an altitude of 4139 m on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. It is owned and operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Subaru is the Japanese name for the Pleiades.
