The first Romantic reaction in Germany against the classical calm of the Enlightenment. The movement, whose leaders included Herder, Goethe and Schiller, emphasized the values of genius, emotional turmoil, and creative enthusiasm. The movement took its name from a play by Maximilian Klinger.
