  • who worked at Oxford University, where he assisted Robert Boyle. Among his many achievements were the law of elasticity (see Hooke’s law), the watch balance wheel, and the compound microscope. In 1665, using his microscope to study vegetable tissues, he saw ‘little boxes’ which he named ‘cells’.


Geology and Earth Sciences
  • An experimental philosopher, Hooke investigated a very wide range of topics and published extensively. He is responsible for Hooke’s law, which laid the foundations for the scientific study of elasticity. In the field of Earth sciences, he studied gravity and planetary movements, earthquakes, geomagnetism, and the nature of fossils and crystallography.
