A chemical reaction between ions. This type of reaction is usually described by an ionic equation, which may or may not include spectator ions (see net ionic equation). Ionic equations are frequently used to describe reactions between aqueous solutions of electrolytes, such as reactions that result in precipitation. Many redox reactions (see oxidation–reduction) are ionic reactions that can be written as ionic equations.
