单词 starquake
释义
starquake

Physics
  • A sudden change in the crust of a neutron star. In the case of neutron stars which are pulsars, starquakes are associated with ‘glitches’ in the regularity of the production of electromagnetic radiation from the pulsar. A starquake is the analogue of an earthquake for a neutral star. Ordinary stars do not have starquakes because they do not have crusts. It is possible to obtain information about the thickness and rigidity of the crust from analysing the patterns of glitches. The starquakes are associated with discontinuous slowing down of the rotating neutron star.

Astronomy
  • A proposed explanation for the abrupt disturbances (glitches) observed in the regular trains of pulses from certain pulsars. According to the starquake theory, a rapidly spinning neutron star will be slightly oblate, and as it slows down it will become more spherical. As it does so, the solid crust will undergo sudden fracturing and readjustments called starquakes, similar to earthquakes.
