The partial condensation of liquid within a distillation column that descends down the column. The condensation does not take place in the condenser but on the walls of the column due to poor insulation. Alternatively, internal reflux is intentionally achieved using an internal heat exchanger that allows the more volatile component for separation to be separated more effectively from the top of the column.
