单词 spintronics
释义
spintronics

Physics
  • A branch of technology that specifically makes use of the quantum-mechanical spin of electrons in electronic devices. The subject is being developed very rapidly and is likely to lead to fast components that both store and process information and to devices used in quantum computing.

Chemistry
  • See molecular spintronics.

Electronics and Electrical Engineering
  • The study and control of the spin of electrons in relation to the operation of information circuits. Spintronics can largely be viewed as composed of two closely related topics, according to the material systems explored: (1) magnetic/nonmagnetic multilayers, granular films, magnetic/oxide tunnelling junctions, etc., which are used in giant magnetoresistance heads, MRAM, etc.; and (2) mesoscopic magnetic/semiconductor heterostructures, which are used in spin field-effect transistors, etc. As the conventional solid-state electronic devices are based on semiconductors, the ability to inject and manipulate spin electrons in mesoscopic ferromagnetic/semiconductor heterostructures is leading to the development of next-generation spintronic devices for simultaneous data storage and processing. Spintronic devices have three advantages over conventional semiconductor devices: (1) it is faster to switch the electron spin than to charge a device; (2) these devices consume less energy; and (3) they are nonvolatile, i.e. the information will remain when the power is off.
