As well as organizations and corporations, philosophers talk of the institution of money or the institution of promises. The idea is that money, or promises, become possible only when a set of rules or norms or conventions implemented in society’s arrangements generate ‘institutional facts’, such as having a debt or having made a promise. The emergence of these norms and conventions is seldom due to explicit contract, but more a matter of gradual growth, fuelled by their evident utility.
