A 10-m diameter millimetre-wave telescope opened in 2007 at an altitude of 2800 m at Amundsen–Scott station at the south pole in Antarctica where the atmosphere is particularly dry and steady. The SPT operates at wavelengths of 3–1.4 mm, studying the cosmic microwave background and detecting clusters of galaxies via the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect. The SPT is operated by a consortium of US universities and institutes.
