Any group of atoms in a molecule that includes an unsaturated chemical group (such as C=C) capable of absorbing ultraviolet radiation; the chromophore is responsible for the colour of the compound. For example, retinal is the chromophore of rhodopsin, the light-sensitive pigment in the rod cells of the retina.
