A region within the inner Van Allen Belt, which reaches its minimum altitude (250 km) over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil. This positioning arises because of the offset between Earth’s magnetic and geographical axes. Artificial satellites in low-inclination and low-altitude orbits pass frequently through the South Atlantic Anomaly, with a consequent risk to their electronic components (including degradation of solar cells) from energetic trapped particles.
