The twelfth child of the Elector Frederick of the Palatinate and Elizabeth, daughter of James I, she married Ernest Augustus of Brunswick-Lüneburg, who became Elector of Hanover. By the Act of Settlement (1701), as the only surviving Protestant descendant of the Stuarts, she was named as Anne’s successor on the British throne. She died a few weeks before Anne and her son became King George I, the first Hanoverian king of England and Scotland. She was a cultured woman with a great interest in English affairs.
