Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer Astronomy
A US satellite launched in 1992 July to study high-energy particles from cosmic rays, solar flares, and the Earth’s magnetosphere. In 1994 it detected a belt of cosmic rays trapped by the Earth’s magnetic field, within the inner Van Allen Belt. It ceased operation in 2004 July.
Space Exploration
A NASA satellite launched on 3 July 1992 into a polar orbit around the Earth to obtain data on energetic particles from the Sun and cosmic rays from deep space over a complete solar cycle. It obtained samples of particles from solar flares and measured the effects of high-speed electrons on the chemistry of the upper atmosphere. The spacecraft was expected to last for three years, but it continued to return science data until its re-entry in November 2012.
