An extensive lowland plain on a planetary surface; pl. vastitates. The name, which means ‘desolation’ or ‘vastness’, is not a geological term but is used in the nomenclature of individual features. The only named example is Vastitas Borealis on Mars, 2000 km across and covering much of the Martian northern hemisphere from 48° to 82° N.
