单词 Socialist League
释义
Socialist League

World History
  • A British political organization, set up in 1884 by the designer William Morris, to re-create society on socialist principles. The League published pamphlets, but its main activity took the form of processions and demonstrations, at times resulting in clashes with police and troops. Its membership, consisting partly of moderates seeking working-class progress through parliamentary methods, but partly, also, of revolutionary socialists and anarchists, was too miscellaneous to endure. By 1890 most moderates had joined the Fabians, leaving only an extremist and ineffective minority.
