单词 George II (1683–1760)
释义
George II (1683–1760)

World History
  • King of Great Britain and Ireland (1727–60) and Elector of Hanover. He resented his father, George I, because of his treatment of his mother, Sophia Dorothea. George’s own marriage, to Princess Caroline of Ansbach, was very successful, and through her he learned to accept Walpole as his Prime Minister. He had a fiery temper and was intolerant in his dealings with others: he insisted on the execution of Admiral Byng in 1757, and was always on bad terms with his son, Prince Frederick Louis. He was the last English king to lead his troops in battle, at Dettingen in 1743 in support of the Empress Maria Theresa during the War of the Austrian Succession. He disliked Pitt the Elder and endeavoured to keep him out of office; his final acceptance of Pitt in 1757 paved the way for British success in the Seven Years War.
