An abbreviation for synthetic natural gas or substitute natural gas, which is a gas that is produced from coal, petroleum coke, solid waste, or biomass. Carbon-containing coal is gasified to produce syngas that is then converted to methane. In the steam-oxygen gasification process, coal is gasified with steam and oxygen to produce carbon monoxide, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, and higher hydrocarbons such as ethane and propane. The composition of SNG is dependent on the temperature and pressures used in the gasifier conditions.
